The New York Times > Sports > Hockey > With Cliff in Sight, N.H.L. Ends Talk

My favorite quote from the article:
"This is 'Thelma and Louise,' " Jim Lites, the president of the Dallas Stars, said before the order for silence was reinstated. "And they are driving the car over the cliff. We are about to kill the business."

I just can't believe the stupidity and greed of both sides, although I blame the players more. And the utter hypocrisy of NHL players now taking the jobs of minor-league players in leagues WITH salary caps, salary caps being something the NHLPA refused to consider until yesterday, just disgusts me.

Most of the big-shots in the players' union are (were) making more in one season than the average fan makes in a lifetime. And they complain about how much they make? How unconscionable a salary cap is? Send 'em here to Iraq for the equivalent of one season. That'll give them a fresh perspective on their "problems."

I just hope the NHL's problems don't negatively effect the minor leagues (other than to the extent they already have; i.e., NHLers taking minor-leaguers' jobs), but I am sure it will.
